Kingston Urges Residents to Build Community Bonds

The City of Kingston is encouraging residents to take simple, meaningful steps to connect with those around them during Loneliness Awareness Week (4 -10 August), launching new resources to help make that easier than ever.

As part of our ongoing commitment to community wellbeing, Council has launched a new Community Directory and interactive map, helping locals discover the wide range of groups, activities and events available across Kingston.

From hobby groups and creative outlets to local clubs and volunteer opportunities, there's something for everyone.

Mayor Georgina Oxley said fostering connection is more important than ever.

"Almost one in three Australians report feeling lonely, and we know loneliness can have a serious impact on our mental and physical health," Cr Oxley said.

"That's why we're encouraging people to take small steps - whether it's joining a local group, saying hello to a neighbour, or just attending a community event. Sometimes, it's those small moments that spark the biggest change."

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports that loneliness is particularly prevalent among young people aged 18–24, but it can affect anyone - at any stage of life. It is also closely linked to issues like anxiety, depression and social withdrawal.

"Building connection doesn't have to be complicated. A smile, a compliment, a shared story - it all helps people feel seen and valued. Our new Community Directory is a great starting point for anyone looking to find their place in Kingston," Mayor Oxley added.

This Loneliness Awareness Week, Kingston is calling on everyone to reach out, get involved, and help make our community a more inclusive, connected place for all.
