La Trobe University welcomes measures announced by the Victorian Government to strengthen university governance and enhance the representation of staff and students on university councils.
"We strongly support measures to strengthen accountability, transparency and the diversity of perspectives at the highest level of university governance," Vice-Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell said.
"La Trobe has lifted the proportion of staff and student representatives on our University Council to almost 30 per cent of our overall membership, signifying an important step in strengthening staff and student voice in University decision-making."
The University has already taken significant steps to strengthen governance in alignment with the Final Report and Principles of the Commonwealth's Expert Council on University Governance.
La Trobe has:
- increased staff membership on Council from two elected staff to three (including the Chair of Academic Board)
- increased student membership from one elected student position to two
- started publishing a short summary of key decisions and outcomes of each Council meeting, providing greater visibility of Council's work and priorities
- published a skills matrix of Council members in its Annual Report.
