Labor Fails on PET Scanners Promise Again

Liberal Party Victoria

Victorians continue to be denied the world-class healthcare they deserve as yet another Labor health election commitment proves to be nothing more than a hollow promise.

Before the 2022 election, Labor promised $44 million to deliver eight new PET scanners for Victorian hospitals by the end of June 2026.

However, the recent 2026-27 State Budget has confirmed the full delivery of these PET scanners has been delayed until at least four years until mid-2030, and the cost has blown out to $69.6 million.

The Allan Labor Government's failure to deliver these PET scanners is the latest broken health promise, including:

  • Abandoning a commitment to deliver 240,000 elective surgeries annually.
  • Cutting promised community hospitals in Torquay, Eltham and Emerald Hill.
  • Failing to deliver major promised hospitals in Maroondah, Wonthaggi and West Gippsland Hospital.

Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Treasurer, Jess Wilson, said: "Time and again, Labor promises one thing before an election, yet fails to deliver.

"This broken PET scanner promise means poorer health outcomes for Victorians across the state and is yet another real-world consequence of Labor's decade of financial mismanagement.

"Only my Liberal and Nationals team has a plan to clean up the books and invest in the essential services Victorians need and deserve - including our healthcare system."

Shadow Minister for Health, Georgie Crozier, said: "These promised PET scanners have proven to be yet another hollow Labor election promise.

"Labor are all about the announcement, but continually fail to deliver.

"Labor promised to build 10 community hospitals, redevelop Maroondah, West Gippsland and Wonthaggi hospitals, and have failed to do so.

"Labor cannot be trusted to do what they say or fix the health crisis their own mismanagement has created."
