Labor welcomes reopening of Blackmans Bay Beach

Tasmanian Labor
  • Finally safe to go back in the water
  • Two years of government delay
  • Community action gets a win
  • After a protracted wait for the community, Labor has welcomed the reopening of Blackmans Bay Beach, with all sections now declared safe for swimmers.

Labor Member for Franklin Alison Standen said it was gratifying that the popular beach has finally been given a clean bill of health.

"Kingborough Council and the Derwent Estuary Program, working in partnership with TasWater and the EPA, deserve a shout out for their efforts investigating and fixing the contamination at the southern end of the beach, which was shut to swimmers in late 2018.

"But I wonder if the people of Blackmans Bay would have had to wait the nearly two years it's taken to get the all clear if the state government had acted more urgently and provided extra resources to tackle the problem sooner.

"Over the past two years I have continued to raise this matter in Parliament and with the relevant authorities on behalf of hundreds of local families with safety concerns over water quality at Blackmans Bay Beach (south).

"For two summers the local community was totally frustrated by the government's inadequate response.

"Hopefully this summer they'll be making a big splash at Blackmans Bay and all popular swimming sites."
