The welfare of animals is a priority for the City of Mount Gambier, and we remain committed to acting swiftly and responsibly when animals are in need.
On Sunday evening 8 June 2025, Council was notified regarding three lambs wandering dangerously close to traffic along Jubilee Highway East. A Council officer responded promptly and, with the immediate safety of both motorists and the animals in mind, worked quickly to remove the lambs from harm. Given the busy traffic conditions, low visibility, and the high risk of a serious accident, the lambs were secured in the nearest safe and enclosed location - Dimjalla Skate Park.
On Monday, the officer continued to monitor the lambs and observed no initial signs of distress. Fresh grass was available at the site, providing food and some hydration. A social media post was published via the City of Mount Gambier Impounded Dogs Facebook page to help locate the owner of the animals.
During a subsequent welfare check on Tuesday morning, a change in the condition of the youngest lamb was observed. Although Council procedures primarily apply to dogs and cats, the officer followed the spirit of these guidelines and began arranging for veterinary assistance. At that time, a local animal carer kindly offered to step in and provide urgent support. The remaining two lambs were transported to a nearby farm soon after, where they continue to receive appropriate care and attention.
We are pleased to report that all three lambs are safe and recovering. Council sincerely thanks the community members who provided assistance during this incident, and we have been in contact with the RSPCA to review the handling of the situation. While livestock incidents are not a common occurrence in the city, we will use this situation as an opportunity to reflect, improve and ensure that our response processes are as effective as possible for any future incidents.
We understand this situation has caused concern for some in our community, and we also acknowledge the impact on Council staff involved. Staff acted in good faith in a challenging and unfamiliar situation. They are dedicated members of this community who care deeply about animal welfare.
We appreciate the community's understanding and ongoing engagement as we continue to work together to protect the safety and wellbeing of all animals in Mount Gambier.
