Lang Park Expands Parking Before Swim Season

The former bus layover on Marine Drive — which just last month posed as the finish line for the World Triathlon Championships Finals — has transformed again, this time to deliver extra parking for foreshore visitors.

The new Lang Park Parking Area is open and ready for the busy summer season. It features 43 additional 2P spots where cars can park free-of-charge for up to two hours during the day.

Lord Mayor of Wollongong Councillor Tania Brown said the new parking spaces are part of Council's long-term vision to improve access to the Wollongong foreshore and the precinct's beaches, parks, restaurants, cafes and entertainment.

"Our foreshore areas are there for all community members to enjoy. Whether it's taking a walk around the beaches and harbour, a beachside picnic with family and friends, or throwing down a blanket to enjoy the New Year's Eve fireworks, they offer our residents and visitors a memorable experience every time," said Cr Brown.

The new car parking spaces are part of a range of improvements that Wollongong City Council is delivering.

"In addition to 43 standard car parks, we have added 2 mobility parking spaces and 6 motorcycle spaces. We have also reinstalled speed cushions along Cliff Road and kerb blisters, splitter islands, roundabouts, and kerb along Marine Drive to make it safer for pedestrians.

"In the new year, more pedestrian crossings be added along Crown Street, Cliff Road and Marine Drive.

Despite the additional spots, Cr Brown says parking will remain in high demand in summer.

"Our beaches and foreshore areas are absolutely world class. No matter how many spots Council adds, it can sometimes be a challenge to find a vacant parking space in peak season," she continued.

"That's why, where possible, we ask beachgoers in the city centre to utilise buses including the free Gong Shuttle Bus to access the patrolled City, North and Fairy Meadow beaches, or get there by active transport like walking, scooting or cycling.

"Or pack a picnic and cool off at one of the other 17 patrolled beaches between Stanwell Park and Windang. Try somewhere new each week and find your own slice of sandy heaven, away from the crowds!"

"Many of our swimming locations have features to support people with disability or mobility needs, including free beach wheelchairs for adults and children."
