Lara Swimming Club Unveils Fresh Look, Accessibility Upgrades

Councillors Chris Burson and Anthony Aitken have joined Lara Swimming Club members to help unveil a new deck, pergola and ramp at its Bank Street clubrooms over the weekend.

The installation of a new accessibility ramp, in place of an elevated entryway, removes a significant barrier for members and visitors with mobility challenges and ensures everyone in the community enjoy the space with ease.

The new shaded area has already become a valuable asset, providing shelter during warm-ups and club events, especially with the recent unpredictable Spring weather.

The deck and pergola are named after Life Member Greg Andrews who passed away last year. Greg was one of the most influential and dedicated members in the club's history who contributed far beyond what is expected of any volunteer.

The project was funded by two Community Infrastructure Grants from Council; one for more than $20,000 in 2020-21 to plan the project and the other for $220,000 in 2023-24 for construction. Community Bank Lara District Bendigo Bank also provided $35,000 in funding and the Lara Swimming Club contributed $5,000.

Also known as the Abe and Jean McClelland Pool, it is Geelong's oldest aquatic centre, with the Lara Swimming Club forming in 1963.

Councillor Burson

Council is proud to help make this project a reality with Community Infrastructure Grants.

The Lara Swimming Club is well-known as a supportive sporting community which endeavours to maintain a small-town country culture, focused on service to people of all abilities.

Not only will the new deck, pergola and accessibility ramp benefit the 70+ members, ranging from five to 86 years old, the upgrades will help to attract new swimmers and visitors.

This project is a great example of Council's investment in community facilities. Our grants program aims to improve the health, wellbeing and capacity of our community, so we look forward to seeing it benefit Lara Swimming Club members for many seasons to come.

If you're in a sporting club, I encourage you to consider applying for a grant to bring a project to life.

Lara Swimming Club President Barry Majetic

The project was first proposed in 2019.

We are incredibly grateful for the generous support of the City of Greater Geelong and the Community Bank Lara District Bendigo Bank - we truly wouldn't be here today without them.

The project's completion marks the final stage of restoring our club room after a devastating storm in February 2024 tore off the roof.

Thank you to everyone who backed our club through each challenge.
