The Queensland Corrective Services Academy is hosting its largest ever group of trainees this week, thanks to the Palaszczuk Government's bold agenda to boost jobs in Queensland.
Minister for Corrective Services Mark Ryan said the 156 trainee officer cohort was a record for the Wacol-based academy.
"Last year, the Palaszczuk Government announced Queensland's two privately-run prisons would come under government control and this cohort represents some of the additional staff required for the safe public operation of these facilities," Minister Ryan said.
"More than ever, right now, every job counts – and Queensland Corrective Services (QCS) is a major employer in our regions."
Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre is on track to transition to public operation next month, and Southern Queensland Correctional Centre is set to transition next year.
Minister Ryan said due to COVID-19 restrictions, the group will have their formal graduation ceremony held at a later date.
"The QCS Academy has done a great job of training this group, particularly considering the social distancing required during the pandemic," he said.
"This training program is intensive, as officers are equipped to undertake their vital public safety roles, managing the most complex and challenging people in our society.
"I commend these trainees for choosing a career on the frontline of public safety in Queensland, and look forward to formally congratulating them in the future."
QCS Commissioner Peter Martin APM congratulated the new officers and encouraged others looking for a stable, interesting job with a wide variety of career paths and job opportunities throughout Queensland to 'take a look inside'.
"These new officers join the QCS family at a time when QCS undergoes transformational change and growth," Commissioner Martin said.
