Latest ARWU rankings show Deakin among Australia's best

The latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) subject rankings have revealed 14 Deakin subject areas as being among Australia's best.

Deakin's Law (2-8 band), Metallurgic Engineering (3) and Education (3-7) subject areas are recognised in the top three range nationally, reaffirming Deakin's status as a leading education and research institution.

The other Deakin University subjects in the ARWU's 'Top 10 range' for 2020 are Telecommunication Engineering (5-6 band); Computer Science and Engineering (6-8); Finance (6-12); Nursing (8); Business Administration (8-15); Food Science and Technology (9-11); Electrical and Electronic Engineering (10-12); Economics (10-12); Management (10-15); Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (10-16); and Clinical Medicine (10-17).

Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Alfred Deakin Professor, Julie Owens, said the rankings were a testament to the University's emphasis on research quality and innovation as it continued to serve the changing learning and career aspirations of Australians and international students.

'I welcome these results because they demonstrate our ongoing commitment to innovation and high quality research and education in a range of competitive areas across our faculties," Professor Owens said.

"Our highly skilled and focused staff, many of whom are world-renowned, apply their expertise to deliver the best possible outcomes," Professor Owens said.

The ARWU Academic Rankings by Subject come after last week's announcement that Deakin remains among the best young universities in the world.

The 2021 Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings Top 50 Under 50 revealed Deakin had improved from 29th last year to 26th in 2020, while the Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings ranked Deakin up eight places from last year to 55th.

Established in 1974 as Victoria's first regional university, Deakin's ongoing achievements reaffirm its status as a world-class institution.

Deakin has proudly retained the title of the top-rated public university in Victoria for overall student experience for ten consecutive years and has more than 60,000 students both domestically and from around the world, studying across campuses in Melbourne, Geelong, Warrnambool and the Cloud.
