Latest exhibitions celebrate local landscape and what makes us human

Two new exhibitions will be unveiled at Caloundra Regional Gallery this week (May 30) featuring prominent Kabi Kabi artist Bianca Beetson alongside landscape works by leading local artists.

In Being Human, artist Bianca Beetson explores notions of identity through a series of photographic works created using smartphone technology. The exhibition is a culmination of seven years research exploring Aboriginal identity through the medium of self-portraiture.

Collected Landscapes features works from the Sunshine Coast Art Collection alongside loans from leading local artists and presents a range of artistic responses to the diverse landscape of our region and surrounds.

Gallery visitors can explore works by Joanne Currie Nalingu, Joseph Daws, Johanna DeMaine, Peter Hudson, Shane Pickett, Sarah Rayner, Luke Roberts and A.J. Taylor.

Arts Portfolio Councillor Rick Baberowski said the exhibitions highlighted the maturity and diversity of our local artists.

"Viewed together, these exhibitions deeply examine our diverse local environment and the Indigenous culture of the region and beyond," Cr Baberowski said.

"This is the first solo exhibition by Bianca Beetson here on the Sunshine Coast and we're excited to bring her work to the Caloundra Regional Gallery."

Artist Bianca Beetson said Being Human explored the notion of what make us human.

"It's those everyday mundane things we do," Beetson said.

"The work also celebrates the survival and diversity of Aboriginal people in this country despite adversity faced since colonisation."
