From international performances to community collaborations, the creative minds of Northcote will be supported through the latest round of the Andrews Labor Government's arts grants.
Minister for Creative Industries Martin Foley joined Member for Northcote Kat Theophanous at Gertrude Contemporary art gallery today to congratulate the local artists who have received grants through the VicArts Grants and Creators Fund programs.
Six projects are among 40 state-wide to receive support through the VicArts Grants program, which provides funding for Victorian artists to develop, present and program new work.
Composer Adam Simmons has received support to tour his jazz work Wu Xing – The Five Elements to Tianjin and Shanghai, while choreographer Victoria Chiu's grant will help her to collaborate with artists from Australia and China on a new contemporary dance production incorporating live music and video.
Skills development is the focus of two projects with the City of Darebin to train young people in creative producing and programming, while Music in Exile connects five diverse musicians with established contemporary musicians to develop new pieces.
Several projects involve community-based collaborations like a new production by youth theatre company Riot Stage which will be developed with ten young people, and a largescale fabric artwork that will be created by artists Larissa Linnell and Eva Abbinga working alongside school and community groups.
Rounding out the latest grant recipients, award-winning audio artist Madeleine Flynn has received support through the Creators Fund.
Madeleine will investigate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. She will work alongside researchers, app developers and writers to create AI prototypes that can interact and respond to a broad audience.
The Creators Fund was established to give creatives the time to focus on the experimentation, research and development that underpins the creation of career-defining new work. Madeleine has been named among 18 'Creators' for 2020 to share in funding worth $679,086.

CREATIVE VICTORIA GRANT RECIPIENTS
VICARTS GRANTS
Katrina Cornwell (Auspiced by Auspicious Arts Projects), $19,999 Creative development and presentation of Everyone Is Famous, a contemporary theatre piece about living in the age of social media. Created by independent youth theatre company Riot Stage in collaboration with ten diverse young people, the performance will premiere in 2020 as part of a major arts festival.
Victoria Chiu (Auspiced by Multicultural Arts Victoria Inc), $22,000 Choreographer Victoria Chiu will work in collaboration with artists from Australia and China on the final development and premiere season of What Happened In Shanghai, a contemporary dance production incorporating live music and video art. The work will premiere as part of Asia TOPA 2020.
City of Darebin, $28,350 To support Let's Take Over, a skills development program helping ten young people from diverse socio-economic backgrounds learn how to become programmers and producers before delivering an event in February 2020.
Larissa Linnell and Eva Abbinga, $19,999 Creative development of Shroud of Remembrance, a community artwork recognising women affected by violence, to be presented as part of a major festival in 2020.
Music in Exile, $30,000 Support for Music in Exile, an organisation that supports culturally and linguistically diverse artists, to connect five artists from their program with other contemporary musicians to explore and develop a range of musical styles and new collaborative works.
Adam Simmons, $23,215 For composer Adam Simmons to present his jazz work Wu Xing – The Five Elements in Tianjin and Shanghai, China. The performance is inspired by Chinese philosophy, composed by Adam and performed by jazz trio Origami with special guests Wang Zheng-Ting, Pete Lawler and Sean Healy.
CREATORS FUND
Madeleine Flynn, $42,015 During experimental audio artist Madeleine Flynn's four-month research and development period, she will explore artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to create prototypes that will be used in her future work. Madeleine will work with app developer, Mick Byrne, researcher Josephine Young, and Nungyar writer Cassie Lynch to explore how to create AI that is culturally inclusive and accessible so that it can interact and respond to audiences from a range of backgrounds.
