Lazy Labor's litany of deception

Jeremy Rockliff,Acting Premier

Labor's Rebecca White and Michelle O'Byrne misled the House yesterday and need to correct the record.

Ms White reeled off a series of porky pies in her Budget reply speech, including that car rego has "skyrocketed" under us, when the facts are that in 2013 the renewal registration for a four cylinder car, (the most common car type) was $566.16, when now it costs $564.51. That's lower.

Ms White claimed power prices had skyrocketed under us, when in fact since the 2014 election, in real terms, prices have decreased by 18.04 per cent for residential customers and have decreased by 27.18 per cent for small business customers.

Ms White claimed water prices have skyrocketed, when they've been frozen for the last two years.

Ms White also claimed there was no mention of mining in the Budget Speech, when our commitments to the resources sector, including mining, are right there on page 10.

Furthermore, Ms White bizarrely claimed there was no mention of families in the Budget Speech – when in fact there are numerous initiatives centred on keeping families and communities safe and secure in Tasmania.

This is a pattern of behaviour from Labor, with the spokesperson for Women, Ms O'Byrne, also fudging the facts yesterday when she quoted comments about the State Budget by respected economist Dr Eslake from an article in The Examiner.

However, Ms O'Byrne failed to mention the comments had nothing to do with this year's Budget, because they were from a year ago!

While the Tasmanian Liberal Government has a plan to secure Tasmania's future and a Budget that provides a pathway to operational surpluses, Labor has failed to deliver an alternative budget or alternative plan.

Ms White needs to lead by example and stop disrespecting Parliament. We call on her to correct the record.
