Leading firefighter development program

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service senior firefighters have been undertaking training as part of the leading firefighter development program.

Twelve members joined the program in November last year. The program is designed to prepare prospective leading firefighters for the role, delivering effective leadership and management skills to ensure quality operational and administrative service delivery for the NTFRS and the community we serve and protect.

The broad skillsets developed during this development program encompass human resources, administration, as well as broader leadership skills for emergency situations, said Assistant Chief Fire Officer Joshua Fischer.

"The leading firefighter is often the face of our service. Incidents are regularly controlled at the leading firefighter level, especially in regional locations and the leading firefighter is likely to lead teams in prevention, protection and community engagement activities."

Over the past week, members have had to undertake timed scenario assessments involving road crashes, hazardous materials, high-rise structure fires, fuel leaks at service stations and rescues.

Once all practical assessments have been completed in the coming weeks, senior firefighters will have completed their training. The program is expected to run again later this year for the next cohort of emerging leaders.

"These members are taking a big step forward in their careers and I wish them every success as they begin their leadership journey," said Mr Fischer.
