Council is excited to announce its NAIDOC Week 2025 celebrations, set to take place on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, aligning with this year's theme: The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy.

A series of engaging events recognising the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples has been developed in close collaboration with the Leeton & District Local Aboriginal Land Council (LDLALC), continuing a valued and long-standing partnership of over 16 years.

The celebrations (including a special performance by the Parkview Public School Wiradjuri Dance Group) will take place in front of the Council building (23-25 Chelmsford Place, Leeton) on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, commencing at 10am. The event will conclude with a morning tea held at the Leeton Museum and Art Gallery, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and reflect on the significance of NAIDOC Week.

Mayor Cr George Weston is looking forward to the upcoming celebrations, stating, "NAIDOC Week 2025 is a moment to reflect, honour, and look ahead with hope. As we celebrate 50 years of strength, vision, and legacy, we stand with our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, acknowledging the powerful contributions of our Elders, recognising the achievements of today, and embracing the leadership of the next generation."

In addition to the events on 29 July, LDLALC, proudly supported by Aboriginal Affairs NSW, is hosting a free 3-Day Animation Workshop for Aboriginal youth from 15 - 17 July 2025. Led by Wiradyuri animator Bernard Higgins (Birdyulang Animations), this workshop invites Aboriginal youth to explore cultural storytelling through digital animation. Those interested can secure their spot via Humanitix. Further, LMAG has added a permanent addition to its Little Roxy theatrette: a collection of Wiradjuri/Wiradyuri language films created by local companies Miil Miil Productions and Birdyulang Animations.

As part of NAIDOC Week 2025 celebrations, the Leeton Shire Library hosted a special NAIDOC-themed Storytime session on Wednesday, 9 July 2025, featuring Courtney Davy, which delighted young attendees with engaging storytelling and hands-on arts and crafts activities.

Leeton Shire Council invites all community members to join in the NAIDOC Week celebrations and take part in acknowledging and celebrating the rich cultural heritage of our nation's First Peoples.
