Legacy Of Learning: Linda's Gift Of Education

Education has been a powerful force in Dr Linda Khong's (B.App.Sc.(Phty) Hons. 97) life, opening doors, shaping her career, and connecting her with a deep sense of purpose. Through a gift in her Will, she hopes education will continue to be part of her legacy.

Growing up in Singapore, Linda studied Business and worked in hospitality. But a chance to shadow a physiotherapist in a local hospital sparked a new calling. With no physiotherapy programs available domestically, she looked abroad. Drawn by the climate and global career prospects, the University of Sydney became her first choice.

In 1994, a Singaporean military scholarship gave Linda the opportunity to pursue her dream. Though it was her first time living overseas, she quickly found a sense of belonging. Placements at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and in Orange connected her with some of Australia's most respected practitioners.

After graduating, Linda returned to Singapore to serve as a military physiotherapist. Later, she moved to Perth, where education continued to shape her path. She completed a master's degree and earned a scholarship to study a PhD in Falls Prevention.

"Education is what got me here, and it's what's given me the chance to give back."

Today, Linda is deemed a leading expert clinician in lymphoedema treatment in Western Australia, helping patients manage symptoms and improve their quality of life. It is a specialism that brings her much purpose "It's like the Japanese concept of ikigai-the reason you wake up," she says. "My patients make me feel valued, and I value them. When you have lymphedema, it's for life. I'm with them throughout their journey."

Linda actively contributes to clinical care, teaching, and research. She credits her success to hard work, great mentors, and the educational opportunities she's received.

"Education is what got me here, and it's what's given me the chance to give back. I've been very fortunate, and I think it's fitting that I help others."

As the University of Sydney celebrates its 175th anniversary, Linda's story is a powerful reminder of education's lasting impact. Quoting Lao Tzu, she says: "Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime." Through her gift in Will, she hopes to offer that same opportunity to someone with talent and drive, who just needs a leg up.
