Local builder wins Esperance sports stadium contract

  • Local business awarded tender for the construction of the Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium
  • Construction is due to commence in May 2019
  • The new Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium is a step closer, with a local construction company chosen to build the fit-for-purpose, multi-functional facility.

Esperance-based Sime Building and Construction has won the tender to construct the $8.36 million indoor sports and recreation centre following a tender process led by project proponent, the Shire of Esperance.

The awarding of the tender to a local firm will provide a welcome boost to the local construction industry and support jobs in the region. The local content component is expected to exceed 75 per cent, with significant flow-on benefits to the regional economy.

Supported by a $4.78 million State Government investment, the new centre will significantly enhance regional amenity and help ensure residents can maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

The much-needed facility will include new indoor courts, kiosk, kitchen, change room facilities and storage space for user groups. The Esperance Indoor Sports Stadium will also act as a venue for local, regional and State events such as the Esperance Agricultural Show and provide overflow tourist facilities when caravan parks reach capacity.

Construction is expected to commence in May 2019, with an expected build time of 12 months. The first step will be work on a new car park, which will be completed by the end of August.

As stated by Acting Regional Development Minister Dave Kelly:

"This project will improve regional liveability, increase participation in sport and recreation and provide a modern venue for the popular Esperance Agricultural Show and other major events.

"The Shire of Esperance has aligned their tender processes with the McGowan Government's commitment to maximising local content on government projects.

"Awarding this tender to an Esperance-based construction company will support local businesses and jobs, and further drive regional capacity."

As stated by Agricultural Region MLC Darren West:

"After many years of waiting by the Esperance community, the McGowan Government is finally getting the Esperance Stadium built - and by locals.

"Our Government is working hard to ensure local businesses win local tenders. I am delighted with this outcome."
