Local G4S Recruits Boost Corrections Capacity

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is strengthening frontline corrections capability, with 43 local G4S officers commencing this month.

With the addition of the new G4S officers, the Northern Territory workforce will stand at 68 employees across the Territory.

Minister for Corrections, Gerard Maley said Territorians deserve a safe community and a strong corrections system, and that's exactly what these new G4S officers will help deliver.

"These new officers represent a boost to our frontline capability, and each one of them will play an important role," Mr Maley said.

"Our Government is focused on building a safer Territory by backing the people who keep our justice system running and ensuring they have the support, training and resources they need."

G4S Officers will manage the Darwin Transitional Custody Centre (DTCC), strengthening transition pathways for prisoners and helping to ease pressure on police watch houses.

They will continue to provide prisoner escort services and hospital bedsit coverage at Royal Darwin and Palmerston hospitals.

In Alice Springs, G4S will assume court-custody duties from early December following a two-week handover with NT Police, enabling police officers to return to frontline duties while ensuring secure and professional management of Local Court operations.

The operations in Alice Springs will be backed by a combination of new recruits and experienced personnel from the existing G4S workforce, with officers rotating from Darwin to meet operational requirements.

The G4S officers have completed a comprehensive Initial Training Course including in-class training, online learning, practical application and workplace shadowing, ensuring they are fully prepared for the demands of the role.

Managing Director for G4S Australia and New Zealand Rebecca Power said the graduations mark an exciting new chapter for G4S in the Territory.

"I am delighted to welcome our new graduates to the G4S team. Completing the Initial Training Course is a significant achievement and seeing so many local community members step up to take on these important roles is inspiring.

"I also want to say a huge thank you to our existing staff. Your dedication and professionalism have paved the way for this expansion of services. It is because of your hard work and achievements in service delivery that the Northern Territory Government trusts us to manage these services and to expand on them into Alice Springs.

"Our partnership with the Northern Territory Government continues to go from strength to strength. We look forward to seeing our new team members make a real difference in contributing to keeping the NT community safe."
