Long-range Forecast: August To October 2025

BOM
Welcome to the Bureau's long-range forecast for August to October 2025.

The rainfall forecast shows wetter than average conditions for many areas of Australia.

But let's start with recent conditions.

Temperatures in July have been above average across northern Australia and parts of the east and south.

Temperatures have been below average for parts of Western Australia and western Queensland and have been close to average elsewhere.

July rainfall has been above average for many areas of the south.

A large rain band at the end of the month led to widespread rainfall across most of the country. This resulted in daily rainfall totals for much of the south-east that were the highest so far this year.

While recent rainfall has been welcome in some southern areas, it has had little impact on longer-term rainfall deficits in the south-east, where rainfall since February 2024 has been among the lowest ever recorded for this period.

Soil moisture across much of the country is currently above average for this time of year, including parts of the south.

Total water storage in Australia is around 65% of combined capacity.

Compared to last month, storages have increased by up to 25% in some southern areas. July inflows increased Adelaide's urban water storages by around 10% over the month.

Streamflow was above average during July in parts of the north and the south-east coast but below average elsewhere in the south.

And now for the long-range forecast.

August to October is likely to be wetter than usual for most of the eastern two thirds of mainland Australia.

There is around an equal chance of rainfall being above, below or near-average for most of Western Australia and the far south-east.

The chance of unusually wet conditions is elevated across much of eastern Australia, west of the Great Dividing Range.

Daytime temperatures for August to October are likely to be above average for northern, western and south-eastern Australia. Below average daytime temperatures are likely for the interior and some eastern parts of the country. This is consistent with the wetter than average forecast and associated cloud cover.

Night-time temperatures are very likely to be above average for most of Australia. Across most of the eastern half of the country, there's a high chance of unusually warm night-time temperatures.

For August to October, waters around much of Australia are forecast to remain warmer than average to the north, south and east.

In summary, we're likely to see:

A wetter than average August to October for most of the eastern two thirds of mainland Australia.

Roughly equal chances of above or below average rainfall for most of Western Australia and the south-east.

And above average daytime and night-time temperatures for most of the country.
