Young people are getting a confronting look at the consequences of violent crime.
The Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth (PARTY) Intervention Program is the only program of its kind in Australia dedicated to young people.
Delivered by the Royal Melbourne Hospital with Youth Junction and the Magistrates' Court the program gives 16 to 25‑year‑olds a first-hand look at the hospital's trauma ward and intensive care unit.
They see first-hand the consequences of their actions from victims of road trauma.
Magistrates can refer young offenders to the program before sentencing and the results of the program speak for themselves.
90 per cent of participants do not reoffend, keeping Victorians safe.
After completing the program, participants submit a written reflection on their offending and what they've learned.
Participants follow the journey of trauma patients and see how a single decision can change a life forever.
They hear directly from patients and families about the physical, emotional and lifelong impacts of serious injuries and substance use.
More than 2,000 young people have completed the program. Most referrals come from the Sunshine, Werribee and Broadmeadows Magistrates' Courts.
The program forms part of the Allan Labor Government's focus on offering solutions to make life safer for Victorians - with Adult Time for Violent Crime now in effect.
Just last year the Liberals called for these programs to be cancelled - Jess Wilson's Liberals will cut early intervention and mentoring because they don't believe in it.
Only Labor has new solutions to make life easier and safer for Victorian families.
As stated by Attorney-General Sonya Kilkenny
"Violence has consequences and this program is making offenders stop, think and make better choices."
"This program works, with 90 per cent of participants not offending again - keeping the community safe."
"Programs like this don't just change lives - they reduce reoffending and help make Victorians safer. The Liberals want to cut these programs - only Labor will deliver solutions."
