A $4.65 million Lotterywest grant will assist the Shire of East Pilbara to build a youth and community hub in Newman to provide a culturally safe space for the community.

The Newman Youth and Community Hub project aims to provide integrated wellbeing, educational, cultural and recreational facilities to support community connection and reduce disadvantage.

The hub will provide a range of programs for young people and offer more opportunities for targeted interventions to reduce vulnerability and disadvantage and promote youth leadership.

The hub will enable a centralised approach to service delivery, allowing local youth service providers to improve co-ordination between programs.

The hub is being built to cater for all ages, and will include a library, youth centre, recording studio, IT rooms, meeting spaces, dedicated children's area, creche, barbeque space, yarning circle and recreational areas.

The Lotterywest grant is in addition to the $7.5 million dollars in funding committed by the Cook Labor Government in the 2025-26 State Budget.

The Shire of East Pilbara is currently finalising the pre-tender documentation and plans to release the tender later this year to build the hub.

Construction of the hub, on the corner of Newman Drive and Iron Ore Parade, is expected to commence in 2026.

As stated by Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley:

"The Cook Labor Government is proud to support projects which are dedicated to enhancing the health and wellbeing of regional communities.

"The Newman Youth and Community Hub will be an amazing facility where people of all ages can interact in a culturally safe and inclusive space, fostering a strong sense of community.

"Our government is particularly pleased that the hub will have a focus on providing programs and services for young people, including those experiencing disadvantage."

As stated by Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson:

"Community hubs are a place for connection, information and support, especially in regional areas.

"This hub will cater for all ages, with services including a creche and youth centre along with a recording studio, and it will prove to be a welcoming space for the Newman community.

"It's welcome news that the project has received further support from Lotterywest, complementing the Cook Government's funding in the 2025-26 State Budget."

As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"This is a fantastic project which will provide the local community with the opportunity to come together in a culturally appropriate setting.

"These types of multipurpose hubs play such an essential role in regional communities, and I'm excited to see such a great community asset being built in my electorate."

As stated by Shire of East Pilbara president Anthony Middleton:

"The Newman Youth and Community Hub will be the heart of our community - a place where people of all ages can connect, learn, and thrive.

"From youth programs and cultural activities to sport, recreation, and family-friendly spaces, the hub will deliver facilities and services that reflect the diversity and aspirations of our region.

"This is a transformative project for Newman and the wider East Pilbara, and I thank Lotterywest, along with the State and Federal governments, for backing our vision to create a vibrant, inclusive and connected community."
