Low-waste living workshops

As we continue to encourage a more waste-conscious community, we want to help Baysiders to re-think their rubbish.

We're providing a series of workshops encouraging waste avoidance to support you in reducing the amount of waste we're producing as a community.

To decrease the amount of waste we send to landfill, from July your food and green waste will be collected weekly and general waste fortnightly. These workshops will help support our community transition to the switched collection schedule.

We're offering workshops on reusable nappies, menstrual products, and more providing informative, easy-to-follow advice on taking the next steps to reduce these frequently used, single-use items.

All things reusable: Everyday reusable items workshop

There are, of course, many everyday household items that can be replaced with reusable alternatives.

Our All things reusable: Everyday reusable items workshop tackles them, making it perfect for those in the community starting out on their zero-waste journey.

The presentation shows reusable substitutes for items such as paper towel, tissues, make-up removal, plastic wrap, face wipes, shopping and produce bags.

The avoidance of waste is the best thing we can do to reduce our overall waste footprint and preserve precious resources. This can easily be achieved by choosing to refuse single-use items and opting for reusables where possible.

Did you know?

  • More than 76,000 babies are born each year in Victoria.
  • Two billion nappies are sent to landfill each year in Australia.
  • Each child, on average generates 700kg of disposable nappies.
  • Over the course of a lifetime, a single menstruator will use somewhere between 5 and 15 thousand pads and tampons - which nearly all end up in landfill.
  • 90% of conventional pads contain plastic (backing, adhesive strips, packaging) which in landfill would take 300-500 years to decompose, if ever.
