Results of 2025 ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects highlight universities' performance across key indicators

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) has retained its position as 1st in the UK for public health in the 2025 ShanghaiRanking.

It has held the top spot in the UK since 2017, when the ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects was first published in its current format.

LSHTM has been ranked 3rd in the world for public health in 2025, behind Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University in the US.

Around 2,000 universities are listed in the rankings. The results are based on nine indicators including world-class research output, quality, impact, and international collaboration, recognising LSHTM's prestigious research and study programmes.

Professor Liam Smeeth, the Director of LSHTM, said: "Congratulations to our amazing community for this achievement. Maintaining the highest quality and commitment to improving public health is no mean feat especially with the many challenges facing the university sector today. The world needs high quality research evidence to drive improvements in health now more than ever. I am delighted that we've stayed in first place in the UK for public health."
