Lured to Tassie fly fishing

Guy Barnett,Minister for Primary Industries and Water

As a keen angler, it is with great honour that I will be on hand to officially welcome competitors and support crew to the 2019 World Fly Fishing Championship here in Tasmania.

This internationally significant event has attracted teams from 23 countries and an estimated 1,000 anglers, support crew and visitors to experience Tasmania's world class fly fishing venues.

Tasmania has some of the world's best wild brown trout fishers and this event firmly places the State firmly on the fly fishing world stage.

The Championship runs from Saturday 30 November to Saturday 7 December 2019 with competition fishing over 5 days from 2 to 6 December.

Five of Tasmania's best fisheries, known for their wild brown trout, will test the skill of competitors - Penstock and Little Pine lagoons, Woods Lake and the Meander and Mersey rivers.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government provided $100,000 to support this event, with additional support being provided by the Inland Fishing Service and Tourism Tasmania.

The Tasmanian Government is committed to supporting this industry and improving angler access. We have invested $300,000 to upgrade and build new amenities and toilets at 10 popular trout fishing locations around the state.

To further improve anglers' access to priority lakes and rivers, the Government has also committed $200,000 to extend the Anglers Access Program in collaboration with Anglers Alliance Tasmania to sites in the state's north-west, north-east and Derwent catchments.

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government is delivering on our long-term plan to manage our inland fishery and encourage more people to discover the joy of fishing in Tasmania's world class inland fishery, and our plan is working benefiting all regions of our state.
