They mightn't have won top spot, but the Lake Mac Lifeguards are feeling accomplished after raising more than $6000 to help kids suffering with Leukemia at a surf comp this week.
It was all part of the annual Evolution Cup event, held as part of Surfest, at Merewether Beach on Thursday 5 March.
Lake Macquarie Councillor Jack Antcliff attended the event and said it was great the team exceeded their fundraising goal of $5000, for Emma's Warriors, and took home second place.
"I challenged the team last year to increase the fundraising campaign, and it's been great to see the organisation get behind our incredible lifeguards to support the charity," he said.
"We take our hats off to the City of Newcastle for winning the competition this year - a bit of friendly competition never goes astray."
"It just always makes spectating that little bit more competitive."
Lake Mac Lifeguards Alex Marshall, Saxon Lumsden, Connor Lee and James McMorland competed at the event.
They've taken home the winning title five times in previous years
Lake Macquarie Manager Leisure Services Brad Sutton said he was proud of the team for their efforts at the Evolution Cup, an event designed to unite local organisations and raise money for those in need.
"The Lake Mac team embodies true community spirit, showcasing diverse water skills and a strong group of talented surfers," he said.
"Surfing is part of our culture on the east coast and taking on this sport whilst raising funds for those in need is all the more rewarding."
"Emma's Warrior's is an amazing charity, founded by Alex and Brendan Walsh after their daughter Emma was diagnosed with and recovered from Leukemia."
Funds support families facing long hospital stays, providing bill assistance and care packs for sick teens and tweens.
