Man charged after caught at 231km/h near Gundagai, NSW

A man has been charged after police detected him allegedly travelling more than 120km/h over the marked speed limit near Gundagai this morning, NSW Police say.

About 7.30am today, officers attached to Traffic and Highway Patrol Command were conducting speed enforcement duties on the Hume Highway at Jugiong when they observed a white Holden utility travelling south above the speed limit.

It’s alleged the driver was detected at 231km/h in a 110km/h marked zone.

Police stopped and spoke to the driver, a 21-year-old man, near Cobbler Road, Jugiong.

He was breath tested at the scene but returned a negative result.

The man was issued a Field Court Attendance Notice for drive at speed dangerous to the public and exceed speed over 45km/h.

His licence has been suspended and his vehicle confiscated.

The man is due to appear at Gundagai Local Court on Friday 13 January 2017.

Assistant Commissioner Michael Corboy of the state's Traffic & Highway Patrol Command has warned road users they will he held fully accountable for their actions.

"Whilst this event has cost this young man his licence, his car, and a significant financial penalty, at these speeds his behaviour could quite easily have cost him his life, along with other innocent road users in the event of a crash," Assistant Commissioner Corboy said.

"We know that as your speed increases, so does the distance travelled while processing and reacting to a hazard. At the same time, the distance needed for you to stop also increases."

"Speeding also contributes to the increased risk of losing vehicle control. At higher speeds, cars become more difficult to manoeuvre - especially on corners or curves or where evasive action is necessary."

"With the road toll currently at 348, 33 more than this time last year, road users clearly need to do more to be safe on our roads."

Driving within the speed limit:
• Allows road users more time to assess hazards and avoid potential crashes.
• Reduces the distance travelled while reacting to hazards.
• Provides a greater opportunity to avoid a collision.
• Makes it less likely that either you or another driver/rider will lose control.
• Reduces the impact forces in the event of a crash, making severe outcomes less likely.
