Man charged after pursuit in Lismore

A man will face court after returning a positive roadside drug test following a police pursuit near Lismore yesterday, NSW Police say.

About 9.45pm (Sunday 30 September 2018), officers from Richmond Police District observed a Holden Commodore travelling at speed on Wyrallah Road, East Lismore.

The driver failed to stop as directed and allegedly accelerated to above the speed limit. Police did not pursue the vehicle due to safety concerns.

Police continued to monitor the vehicle as it travelled through Goonellabah and Alstonville.

A pursuit of the vehicle was initiated after officers from the Traffic & Highway Patrol Command allegedly sighted the car on Alstonville Cemetery Road.

Police deployed road spikes at the intersection of Westbridge Lane and Uralba Road.

The vehicle continuing travelling at speed, before stopping on the Pacific Highway at West Ballina.

The driver, a 34-year-old man, was subject to a roadside drug test and allegedly returned a positive result to methamphetamine. He was arrested and taken to Lismore Police Station.

Officers searched the Holden and seized ammunition.

The man was charged with five offences;

  • Police pursuit – not stop – drive recklessly
  • Drive motor vehicle during disqualification period
  • Drive dangerously
  • Fail to comply with request or signal to stop
  • Possess ammunition without holding licence

The man was refused bail and will appear at Lismore Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 2 October 2018).
