Man charged after serious assault in Camperdown

Police have charged a man following an assault in Sydney’s inner west last night, NSW Police say.

About 7.00pm today, emergency services were called to a function hall at a university in Camperdown, following reports a man had been assaulted.

On arrival, a 55-year-old man was located unconscious on the ground.

NSW Ambulance paramedics attended and treated the man for head and facial injuries. He was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

Police were told the man had been approached by another man who allegedly punched him, causing him to fall to the roadway.

Officers from Newtown Local Area Command arrested a 40-year-old man nearby.

He was taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Newtown Local Court on Thursday 15 June 2017.

Inquiries into the incident are continuing and anyone who witnessed the incident should contact police via Crime Stoppers.
