Man Charged in Hunter Valley Assault, Theft

A man will face court today charged with assault, stealing and drug offences in Hunter Valley.

Shortly after 2pm yesterday (Tuesday 21 April 2026), police were called to Edwards Street, Kurri Kurri, following reports a man had threatened staff before at nearby businesses.

Officers from Hunter Valley Police District attended and arrested a 29-year-old man nearby.

Inquiries indicate the man had earlier allegedly smashed the window of a liquor store on Rawson Street, Kurri Kurri.

He then entered two businesses on Lang Street before allegedly taking alcohol and drinks and leaving without paying.

The man entered a hairdresser on Lang Street a short time later, where he allegedly took a pair of scissors from a staff member and threatened them before leaving the store.

There were no reports of any injuries.

The 29-year-old man was taken to Cessnock Police Station where he was charged with six offences,

  • Possess prohibited drug
  • Custody of knife in public place – subsequent offence
  • Destroy or damage property
  • Shoplifting
  • Common assault, and
  • Armed with intent to commit indictable offence.

He was refused bail to appear at Bail Division Court 2 today (Wednesday 22 April 2026).
