Mancel College appoints new Principal renowned for driving innovation

Mancel College

Brisbane, Queensland:

Mancel College, the only school in the country entirely dedicated to students with Language Disorder, has appointed a new Principal, Mr Peter Foster.

It is a big and exciting challenge for the experienced educator, as Language Disorder is largely undiagnosed and untreated, even though it conservatively affects 10% of learners in a typical classroom. Children with the condition often have difficulty understanding what people say to them and struggle to articulate their ideas and feelings.

Mr Foster is determined to place students in the best possible position to achieve their goals and aspirations, stating that "with the level of support and wonderful staff, we can provide outstanding outcomes for all our students at a variety of levels. We will be educating the whole child, staying true to our values."

A passionate educator with over 30 years of experience, Mr Foster has a very impressive track-record.

Under his helm as Principal, Hymba Yumba Independent School secured the Top Innovative Schools Award in 2020 and 2021 and was announced by "The Educator Magazine" as the top Secondary School (non-government) in Australia. Prior to leading Hymba Yumba, he was Headmaster of the prestigious John Paul College.

Mark Yeowell, CEO of Language Disorder Australia, is thrilled with the appointment, "it is incredibly exciting to have Peter joining us in the journey of improving lives of children and young people with Language Disorder. His experience, passion and drive for innovation will make a substantial difference for our students, families and staff".

This important appointment follows the recent name change of the school, previously known as the Glenleighden School. The new name, Mancel College, honours its founder, Mancel Ellis Robinson OAM, who in 1976 identified a lack of services and educational facilities for children with 'communication and learning problems'.

These milestones coincide with the roll-out of a multi-million-dollar campus Master Plan that introduces several new classrooms, specialist technology facilities, dedicated spaces for the arts, a sports hall, and a swimming pool. The first building in the Master Plan and the new adventure playground will be fully available to the school community this term.

Mr Foster could not contain his excitement with the project, "the new adventure playground and new facilities are world class and provide fantastic opportunities for all of our current and future students to develop a love of learning. Our aim is for all students who graduate from Mancel College to be earning or learning after their journey with us."

Operated by Language Disorder Australia, the peak body in Australia educating, supporting, and advocating for children and young people with Language Disorder, Mancel College is staffed by an accomplished team of teachers, therapists, and support staff.
