Marine search and rescue, Hervey Bay

A man is recovering after being rescued from waters off Hervey Bay this morning when his boat struck a whale, Queensland Police say.

Shortly before 3am, the sole occupant of the eight-metre vessel activated an EPIRB as the boat was sinking between Hervey Bay and Fraser Island.

Resources involved in the search included a rescue helicopter, Water Police and VMR.

The man was located floating in the water by the rescue helicopter around 4.30am and rescued by crew from the Water Police Vessel S.W. Gill just after 5am.

He was transported to Hervey Bay Hospital with only minor injuries.
