Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery visited Roebourne District High School today to tour the school and discuss plans for its recently announced redevelopment as part of the WA Recovery Plan.
The $42 million investment will see the school receive a total redevelopment from kindergarten through to the secondary school areas, with a particular focus on facilities for programs to engage Aboriginal children.
Students, staff and the Roebourne community will collaborate with the State Government on the planning of the new design with the voices of students, parents and the community reflected in every stage of the development.
It is intended that the new design will provide greater opportunities for all staff and students to understand and respect Aboriginal history, culture and language.
The project is currently in the consultation phase with First Nations people of the Roebourne area providing input, including the Ngarluma, Yindjibarndi and Banyjima language groups.
The State Government's unprecedented Major School Upgrade package - totalling $492.2 million - includes $319.2 million of new funding for upgrades and refurbishments at 63 public schools around the State, stimulating economic growth and supporting around 1,850 jobs.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"The redevelopment of Roebourne District High School is an exciting project that will bring forward the ideas and future vision for the school from the students, parents and wider community.
"Collaboration is underway with the Roebourne Aboriginal community and I'm told that a group of students have already put together a video with some suggestions which is fantastic."
As stated by Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:
"We're committed to building and redeveloping schools across the Pilbara region to ensure that students are receiving a high-quality education no matter where they live.
"This is just one of a number of commitments we have made recently to schools in the area which will enhance the learning experiences for students in our community and create jobs for locals during construction."
