Master builders Victoria names top projects in state's North East

Scott James Builder and Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd received top honours tonight at the North East Master Builders Regional Building Awards, held at the Commercial Club in Albury.

Scott James Builder was named Residential Builder of the Year (North East) for a monumental single-storey home in Tangambalanga composed of contrasting, rusted steel and cast concrete forms.

Prior collaboration between builder and architect helped them work easily and efficiently together to translate concepts and plans into a three-dimensional reality. The structure is bold and simple, changing in appearance according to shifts in light and weather, and providing a quiet setting for close observation of the surroundings.

"One of the captivating details of this home is the way the builders made use of the colour and texture inherent to the surface materials inside and out," Master Builders Victoria CEO Rebecca Casson said. "The home frames views on multiple scales and levels."

Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd was named Commercial Builder of the Year (North East) for its work on Shepparton Villages Maculata Place in Shepparton.

"Shepparton Villages was designed to create a community atmosphere for its residents, using central courtyards to help bring natural light into the inner reaches of the facility. Each wing has been given a street name and the dining and living areas are large and inclusive. The considerations of dementia patients were considered carefully, providing them with areas that minimise the frequency of locked doors and enclosed spaces. Likewise, external fencing and landscaping were designed to avoid creating visual isolation." Ms Casson said.

"Hansen Yuncken has taken another important step in providing living environments sensitive to the needs of our ageing and rapidly growing population in Victoria," she said.

Scott James Builder will now compete in the Victorian Excellence in Housing Awards to be held on 11 October in Melbourne. Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd will compete in the Victorian Excellence in Construction Awards to be held on 16 August at Palladium, Crown.
