Maverick pride was on full display during The University of Texas at Arlington's annual MavsMeet Kickoff at College Park Center on Monday, the first day of the fall 2025 semester.
The spirited tradition marked the beginning of a new year of learning, making memories, meeting new people and discovering opportunities for success.
President Jennifer Cowley welcomed students and encouraged them to embrace the year ahead.
"Today is the start of something amazing, and y'all have already made one of the best decisions of your life by deciding you're going to be a UTA Maverick—by deciding you're going to start a new chapter and you're going to do it right," President Cowley said. "We will help shape you in ways you can't even imagine."
Students, both new and returning, danced, chanted and hollered from the stands throughout the evening's events. The UTA Marching Band set the celebratory mood, while RISE A Capella, the UTA dance team, student-athletes and others helped to rile up the crowd.
Two special presentations celebrated UTA's 130th anniversary: the unveiling of Maximus Eventus, the commemorative spirit horse, and a performance of University's new fight song by the UTA Marching Band.
Provost Tamara L. Brown, Vice President for Student Affairs Lowell Davis and Student Body President Effua Jordan also addressed the students. Speedy Morman, a nationally recognized host, journalist and executive producer known for his work at the entertainment network Complex, served as emcee. UTA alumna, bestselling author and award-winning speaker Jessica Rector engaged the student body with her motivational keynote.

Provost Brown said the first day of the academic year is one of her favorites because the campus becomes alive with new and old faces, connections and curiosity.
"Students, you are why we are here; you are our purpose; you are the core of our mission; and you are the reason that we all get out of bed every morning and come to campus," Dr. Brown said. "It's my mission and the mission of all the faculty and staff at this campus to mentor you, encourage you, support you and provide you with the knowledge and skills that you need to make the most of your time at UTA and to lead successful and fulfilling lives after your graduate."
The celebration continued into the night at College Park Center during the MavsMeet Afterparty.
Maverick Stampede, the official kickoff to the new academic year, continues through Aug. 29.
