Melbourne will host the next World Tram Driver Championship in 2027, bringing the global spotlight to the world's largest tram network for the first time.
This comes as the World Tram Driver Championship takes place this weekend in Vienna, where two tram drivers and their coach are representing Australia and competing against 24 other countries to take out the top spot.
Drivers have competed in challenges to put their driving skills to the test, with disciplines ranging from precision stopping and speed control.
Melbourne's tram network is the largest in the world, with more than 250 kilometres of double track and over 5,000 daily services moving almost 200 million passengers every year.
In 2022, Australia was the first ever non-European country chosen to compete in the European Tram Driver Championships in Leipzig, Germany.
Hosting the competition builds on Melbourne's reputation as a leading destination for international sporting events including the Australian Open, the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and the Melbourne Cup.
The Labor Government's $1.85 billion project will see 100 G Class trams roll out onto the network, as well as a new tram maintenance and stabling facility in Maidstone and supporting more than 1,900 local jobs.
