The Crisafulli Government has today honoured the courage and sacrifice of Queensland's firefighters with the unveiling of a Memorial Wall at the new Queensland Fire Department Headquarters in Albion.

The 12-metre memorial stands as a lasting tribute to 60 Queensland Fire and Rescue and Rural Fire Service firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty, and stretches back to Brisbane volunteer firefighter James Thomas Mooney, who died on 25 March 1877.

The new Albion Headquarters, now home to more than 900 QFD personnel, has undergone extensive refurbishment to deliver a modern, fit-for-purpose facility that supports those who continue to protect Queensland communities.

The Crisafulli Government has delivered more than $134 million for modernised facilities, vehicles and equipment for the Queensland Fire Department to continue to keep Queenslanders safe after the former Labor Government's decade of neglect.

Minister for Fire, Disaster Recovery and Volunteers Ann Leahy said the memorial reflected the Crisafulli Government's commitment to honouring firefighters and properly supporting their legacy.

"The names on this wall represent extraordinary courage and sacrifice, and each one is a reminder of the debt we owe to those who gave their lives protecting Queenslanders," Minister Leahy said.

"For too long, our firefighters were taken for granted and not given the support they deserved, but the Crisafulli Government is making sure they are recognised, respected and backed, along with the families who stand beside them."

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services, and Member for Clayfield Tim Nicholls said it was fitting the new Headquarters and Memorial Wall would stand in the heart of the local community.

"It is a privilege for our community to host this important new headquarters and a memorial that honours the brave firefighters who gave their lives to protect others," Minister Nicholls said.

"Having this tribute here in Albion ensures their legacy will be seen and remembered every day by those who continue to serve and protect our communities."

Queensland Fire Department Commissioner Steve Smith said refurbishment of the new facility provided the opportunity to honour fallen firefighters in a way not seen before.

"Future memorial plaques on this wall will include the names of personnel lost as a result of service, giving recognition to circumstances including presumptive illnesses covered by legislation," he said.

"The wall is publicly viewable which gives greater accessibility to those interested in commemorating our fallen firefighters, and gives our comrades the prominence that they deserve, at the entryway to our new QFD headquarters."
