Kingston Promotes Connection During Loneliness Week

The City of Kingston is inviting residents to make room for connection this Loneliness Awareness Week (3-9 August) by taking part in a range of free and low-cost activities designed to bring people together.

This year's Loneliness Awareness Week Australia theme, Make Room for Connection, reminds us that meaningful connection doesn't happen by accident, it grows through the spaces and opportunities we intentionally create for one another.

Across Kingston's community centres, neighbourhood houses, libraries and community hubs, residents can enjoy a wide range of welcoming activities throughout the week.

Whether it's sharing a meal at the Community Roast Lunch, enjoying live entertainment at Morning Melodies, testing your luck at Bingo, or simply sitting down for a chat over a cuppa, there are plenty of opportunities to meet new people, reconnect with others and feel part of the community.

Mayor Georgina Oxley said creating a connected community starts with simple acts of kindness and making time for one another.

"Connection doesn't always come from big moments. Sometimes it's inviting someone to join you for a coffee, chatting with a neighbour while walking the dog, or sitting down with new people at a community event. Those everyday moments can brighten someone's day and remind them they're part of something bigger," Cr Oxley said.

"Kingston is full of welcoming places where people can meet others who share their interests, whether that's over a meal, through a creative activity, a game, or simply enjoying good conversation. Loneliness Awareness Week is a wonderful reminder to take that first step, but these opportunities are available right throughout the year."

Mayor Oxley said everyone has a role to play in building a more connected community.

"Making room for connection can be as simple as saying hello, checking in on someone you haven't seen for a while, or welcoming a new face into your local group. These small gestures help create the kind of caring, inclusive community we all want to be part of."
