The Victorian Greens have welcomed the introduction of mandatory minimum passing distance laws in Victoria and say it will help make our roads safer for everyone.
The announcement follows years of pressure from cycling advocates and three separate attempts by the Victorian Greens to introduce 'metre matters' legislation into Parliament.
The Greens most recently introduced 'metre matters' laws one year ago during an emergency sitting of parliament.
Victoria has previously been the only state without minimum passing distance laws.
As stated by Victorian Greens spokesperson for transport, Sam Hibbins MP:
"As more and more people, particularly families, are choosing to ride a bike for transport or exercise because of COVID-19, metre matters laws will help make our roads safe for everyone.
"A minimum passing distance will quickly create more space for bike riders to be safely separated from vehicles.
"Transport is the biggest growing source of emissions in Victoria. More people riding their bikes will reduce carbon emissions, cut congestion and improve people's health."
