Millions of customers data leaked over Optus hack

Millions of Australians have had their personal details compromised in a major data breach after a reported cyberattack on Optus.

The telco said in a statement the breach affects both current and former customers of Optus.

Information which may have been exposed includes customers’ names, dates of birth, phone numbers, email addresses, and, for a subset of customers, addresses, ID document numbers such as driver’s licence or passport numbers,” the statement said.

“Payment detail and account passwords have not been compromised.”

"We are devastated to discover that we have been subject to a cyberattack that has resulted in the disclosure of our customers' personal information to someone who shouldn't see it," said Kelly Bayer Rosmarin, Optus CEO.

Optus,  is a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based Singtel, and the second-largest carrier in Australia, with 10.5 million subscribers as of 2019.

It is now known if Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) that use Optus network are affected.
