May 2, 2019 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada
The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, will attend an emergency meeting of the Lima Group in Lima, Peru, on Friday, May 3, 2019, as the crisis in Venezuela escalates.
“Over the past few days, the Venezuelan people have once again shown their strength, courage and determination, calling for the end of the Maduro dictatorship and a return to democracy, despite the violent repression of the regime. Canada remains steadfast in our support of interim president Juan Guaidó and the National Assembly in their struggle for free and fair elections. Now is the time for Nicolás Maduro to step aside and allow for a peaceful end to this crisis.”
– Hon. Chrystia Freeland, P.C., M.P., Minister of Foreign Affairs
More than 3 million Venezuelans have been forced to flee their homes since 2015 in search of food, health care and other basic services.
The Lima Group was established on August 8, 2017, in Lima, Peru, to coordinate participating countries’ efforts and apply international pressure on the Maduro regime.
The Lima Group, which now includes the interim government of Venezuela, is committed to supporting the efforts of the Venezuelan people to restore constitutional democracy in their country.
Canada has hosted the Lima Group on October 26, 2017, and February 4, 2019, in Toronto and Ottawa, Ontario, respectively.
