Minns Government Fast-Tracks Road Safety Upgrades at Nine Sites

NSW Gov

Targeted road safety improvements will be delivered at nine regional NSW locations following recent fatal crashes, as the Minns Labor Government moves quickly to address identified safety risks and help prevent future tragedies.

More than $900,000 has been allocated through the Towards Zero Fatal Crash Response Sub-Program to deliver immediate safety improvements at locations where a recent fatal crash has occurred.

The program enables Transport for NSW and councils to quickly assess crash sites and fund practical measures that can reduce the risk of future fatal or serious crashes.

While no road safety measure can undo the loss experienced by families and communities following a fatal crash, the rapid-response program provides an opportunity to learn from what has happened and act quickly to make roads safer.

The latest funding will deliver:

  • $100,000 for Bega Valley Council to install semi-rigid safety barriers, upgrade line marking, improve signage, curve alignment markers and retroreflective pavement markers along Mount Darragh Road.
  • $100,000 for Bega Valley Council to install semi-rigid safety barriers, audio-tactile line marking, improved signage and line marking, curve alignment markers and retroreflective pavement markers on Towamba Road between the Princes Highway and Silver Top Crescent intersections in Eden.
  • $111,221 for Byron Shire Council to improve pedestrian safety and visibility along Raftons Road in Bangalow.
  • $117,343 for Transport for NSW to install audio-tactile line marking on the Mitchell Highway at Naroogal Road in Bakers Swamp.
  • $103,015 for Transport for NSW to extend safety barriers along the southern side of the Castlereagh Highway near Wallaroo Road in Mendooran.
  • $150,920 for Transport for NSW to install a safety barrier over a large culvert on Henry Parkes Way between Overland Road and Yarrabandai Road at Bogan Gate.
  • $39,600 for Transport for NSW to install safety barriers on the Kamilaroi Highway near Wee Waa.
  • $97,925 for Transport for NSW to alter the arrangement of two intersections along Moss Vale Road.
  • $85,408 for Transport for NSW to install static signage along Bulli Pass and heavy vehicle triggered Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) on approach to the hairpin bend.

Following a fatal crash, Transport for NSW and councils can nominate a location to be reviewed for funding under the Fatal Crash Response Sub-Program.

Applications are assessed promptly so safety improvements can be identified, funded and delivered as quickly as possible.

The program is one of the ways the NSW Government is working to respond to serious crashes, learn from what has happened and take action to reduce the risk of further loss of life on NSW roads.
