Mitchell Shire Celebrates NAIDOC Week

Mitchell Shire marked the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week on 9 July with a vibrant community celebration hosted by Goranwarrabul House. This year's theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," was brought to life through a powerful Smoking Ceremony led by Elders Aunty Joanne Honeysett and Uncle Shane Monk.

National NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across Australia in the first week of July each year to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

A community parade followed, pausing at the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk to honour fallen First Nations soldiers. The celebration continued at Kings Park with live music, cultural stalls, and free food.

Mitchell Shire Youth Services drew a crowd with their ever-popular prize wheel, giving away NAIDOC-themed merchandise, while Libraries showcased a beautiful collection of children's books by First Nations authors and illustrators.

The event was proudly supported by Taungurung Land and Waters Council, First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria, Family Care, Rights Information and Advocacy Centre, and Mitchell Shire Council- highlighting the strength and unity of the Mitchell Shire community.
