Monash has improved its performance in the 2025 ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) to #76, up six places from last year out of more than 2500 universities ranked globally. The latest result solidifies the University's prestigious standing as assessed by the ARWU since 2016.
Monash University Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Sharon Pickering said the result reinforces the University's reputation as a leading international university committed to education and research excellence.
"Monash University's strong performance in these rankings reflects the incredible work of our people and their dedication to our founding purpose: to drive meaningful and positive change for the benefit of aspiring communities and industries, locally, across our region and around the world," Professor Pickering said.
The result follows Monash's outstanding performance in global university rankings. In our short history we have established ourselves consistently among the world's best tertiary institutions. We rank in the world's top-50 universities in the QS World University Rankings 2025, QS Sustainability Rankings 2024, and US News and World Report Best Global Universities Rankings 2024-25.
The ARWU adopts six objective indicators to compile its global university rankings. These comprise the number of:
- alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals,
- articles published in the journals of Nature and Science,
- Highly Cited Researchers by Clarivate,
- articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded™ and Social Sciences Citation Index™ in the Web of Science™, and
- per capita performance.
