Monash Univ. Addresses Religious Centre Graffiti

Monash University

Monash University is aware of the abhorrent graffiti in the Monash University Religious Centre on the Clayton campus on 7 March.

As soon as the University became aware, immediate steps were taken to remove the graffiti by painting over it and urgently reported the matter to Victoria Police, and their investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

The University also increased security around the Religious Centre and other places of worship on campus.

The University has commenced work on security upgrades, including additional CCTV and access control in these spaces. While it is regrettable that such measures are necessary in places of worship, any further actions will be developed sensitively and in close consultation with the University community. Work is also underway to consider further permanent security measures for these areas.

The University has been engaging in outreach to those members of our community directly impacted and is continuing to offer support through a range of services including counselling.

The University is working closely with the University's Muslim Chaplain and the Monash University Islamic Society about this matter, and ensuring the necessary support is available.

We take all incidents of this nature extremely seriously and there is zero tolerance for any form of racism in our community.
