Mordialloc's Sea Scouts to get modern and accessible new home
The refurbishment of the 5th Mordialloc Sea Scouts Hall will begin soon, after Council awarded a $765,000 contract to extend and upgrade the building.
The refurbishment of the hall at George Woods Reserve will provide a modern, safe and accessible facility for the Sea Scouts.
The Sea Scouts relocated there after their former home on Lambert Island was deemed to have reached the end of its useful life and is to be demolished, with the area returned as public open space.
Kingston Mayor Steve Staikos said Council had been working closely with Scouts Victoria who have contributed just over $117,000 to the project, to improve the facilities and make them accessible for all abilities.
"The existing Sea Scouts hall was built in the 1980s and was in desperate need of modernising to ensure it was safe, accessible and met the needs of the community into the future," Cr Staikos said.
"The refurbishment will support ongoing Scouting activity in the Mordialloc area, with a particular connection to the creek and boating heritage of Mordialloc."
"Council is working to ensure equity of access in all our Scout and Guide halls across Kingston and we've already completed a number of building upgrades with more to come."
Council will also be piloting a green façade as part of the refurbishment of the Sea Scouts building in response to Kingston's new Urban Cooling Strategy.
"This is the first time Kingston has trialled a green façade on our buildings so we're very excited to see this pilot project come to life," said Cr Staikos. "The green wall will be made with native plant species and will help filter pollutants and carbon dioxide out of the air, as well as helping to cool the surrounding area."
It's hoped the green façade will also help reduce any graffitiing of the building.
The demolition of the former 4th Mordialloc Sea Scouts building on Lambert Island is due to start in April with the refurbishment of the hall at George Woods Reserve scheduled to start in late March.
