More Beds And Better Services For North West Hospitals

Liberal Tasmania
  • Jeremy Rockliff Premier, Minister for Tourism, Minister for Trade and Major Investment, Member for Braddon
  • The entire first stage of the North West Hospitals Masterplan will be delivered under a re-elected Tasmanian Liberal Government, providing a major boost for the region.

The redevelopment will future-proof the healthcare needs for all Tasmanians in the North West by delivering newer buildings, better services, and a significant increase in car parking.

At the North West Regional Hospital (NWRH), our $174 million investment will deliver a Link Bridge to join the southern portion of the site to the core of the Hospital, a new Medical Inpatient Unit building to house the existing Medical Ward, Clinical Diagnostics, Dialysis, and the Lung Function Laboratory.

At the Mersey Community Hospital, our investment will provide a new sub-acute building, providing medical oncology services, and a new inpatient unit for geriatric evaluation and management.

Importantly, the completion of stage one will also deliver an additional 373 car parks (at the NWRH) on top of the 43 already delivered - a total of 416.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff said our Government is ensuring Tasmanians can access the right care, in the right place, at the right time.

"We're getting on with the job of completing the first stage of the North West Hospitals Masterplan - a 20-year vision to transform healthcare in the North West to meet the future needs of the community," the Premier said.

"By building an even better healthcare system, we're delivering the modern facilities we need to attract more doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals to the North West.

"This builds on our existing commitments to stage one that were funded in the 2025-26 Budget, including $40 million for the new Mental Health Precinct, and $16.9 million for an expanded Emergency Department and a new ambulance drop-off, along with upgrades to the Acute Care Facility at the NWRH.

"We will continue working with the Federal Labor Government to secure a funding partnership for these important upgrades, but in the absence of any leadership from Canberra, we will lock in funding to provide certainty to the North West and ensure these important projects will be delivered.

"A majority Liberal Government is the only way to keep Tasmania moving forward with certainty, stability, and efficiency.

    "Let's get on with it.

"Let's finish the job for Tasmania."

Planning and design work to finish the job and complete stage one will begin in the first 100 days of a re-elected Liberal Government being sworn in, with the works to be completed by 2030.

The 2025-26 Budget already includes $56.9 million in funding for the North West Regional Hospitals Masterplan, with the remaining to be funded from capital investment profile.
