More Public CCTV For City Of Port Phillip

City of Port Phillip
Today, Mayor Alex Makin joined Josh Burns MP to announce City of Port Phillip is partnering with the Australian Commonwealth Government to improve safety and security for community and local business - investing $1.5 million towards the Port Phillip Public Place CCTV Expansion Project.

This project will increase public place CCTV across the City of Port Phillip through the installation of new systems in key retail precincts Port Melbourne, Balaclava, and South Melbourne. The new systems will complement the existing CCTV network across St Kilda which is currently being renewed by City of Port Phillip.

The project will also include the acquisition of a new mobile CCTV trailer to provide additional surveillance in areas with increased antisocial behaviour.

Public Place CCTV has a positive influence on community wellbeing. The visible presence of CCTV cameras can deter crime, aid investigations, and improve public perceptions of security.

Increased perceptions of safety can support a wider usage of public spaces, support community events and movement, and contribute to a more vibrant and connected local community.

City of Port Phillip will work with Victoria Police to ensure these new systems are supporting law enforcement in the vital work they do to protect our community.

The Strengthening Community Safety Program

This funding is provided as part of the Albanese Labor Government's Strengthening Community Safety Program - delivering on election commitments announced as part of the 2025 federal election.

The Port Phillip Public Place CCTV Expansion Project will be delivered in partnership with the City of Port Phillip addressing community safety along Bay Street, Port Melbourne, Clarendon Street, South Melbourne and Carlisle Street in Balaclava. In addition, the City of Port Phillip will invest in a mobile CCTV camera to provide a flexible response across Port Phillip.

The intended outcomes of the program are to:

  • Contribute to enhanced community safety to promote the responsible and positive use of public spaces
  • Contribute to greater community resilience and wellbeing by addressing crime, anti-social behaviour and other security risks
  • Help reduce the potential for fear of crime and aim to increase feelings of safety and positive community engagement more generally
