Moreno to lead new Department of Education

Dr. Nancy Moreno

has been appointed chair of the new Department of Education, Innovation and Technology at Baylor College of Medicine. Baylor's Board of Trustees approved the appointment this week, effective immediately.

Moreno has served as associate provost of faculty development and institutional research at Baylor College of Medicine since 2015 and also is director of Baylor's Center for Educational Outreach and professor in the School of Health Professions and Department of Family and Community Medicine.

The new Department of Education, Innovation and Technology was established earlier this year to serve as the academic home of education as a discipline at Baylor College of Medicine. The department will work collaboratively across the institution to prepare Baylor faculty as educators and scholars who apply the science of teaching and learning to develop effective educational practices in science and healthcare.

"Dr. Moreno has been a tremendous leader at Baylor College of Medicine, and especially in our K-12 educational programs," said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean at Baylor College of Medicine. "She established our partnership with Houston ISD to create the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan and the Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk middle schools. These schools, and others we partner with, have had a significant impact on providing students with outstanding educational experience in science and led to many pursuing careers in science or medicine."

Moreno was elected as a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2018 for her distinguished contributions to K-12 education and for science and health curriculum development. She has earned Baylor's Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education and the AAAS Science Prize for Online Resources in Education, awarded to BioEd Online, an educational resource for educators, students and parents. She earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. from Rice University.

"I'm honored to be the inaugural chair of the Department of Education, Innovation and Technology at Baylor College of Medicine," Moreno said. "My goals for this exciting new department are to contribute to the quality of science and health teaching and learning at all educational levels and stimulate development, application and dissemination of educational resources and approaches benefiting the learning health system at Baylor and across the nation."
