Naming Of New Facilities: Bayside

Bayside Council will soon start a comprehensive community engagement process for the naming of the new Botany Aquatic Centre redevelopment and the Arncliffe Community Centre.

The naming of these two significant community facilities presents an opportunity to meaningfully engage with the community and reflect the cultural, historical and social identity of the Bayside Local Government Area (LGA).

In accordance with Council's adopted Place Naming Policy proposed naming options will be explored for each facility and presented to the community feedback.

This will include Aboriginal names, Dual naming that incorporates an Aboriginal place name together with a non-Aboriginal name. Other naming options include commemorative names recognising significant individuals, anniversaries or events relevant to the history and culture of the surrounding area.

Council recently awarded the tender for the construction of the new Botany Aquatic Centre that will include a new building with indoor pools, amenities, gym space, change rooms and kiosk, a new outdoor 50m pool with grandstand seating and new adventure waterplay and slides.

The Arncliffe Central development is a mixed-use residential and retail development currently under construction by Billbergia at 161-179 Princes Highway, Arncliffe. The development comprises 4 residential towers, a childcare centre, a central park and retail floorspace.

Council has purchased approximately 1,634m2 of this development to be used as the community hub.

A report on the outcome of the consultation process will be presented to a future Council Meeting.
