Australia's National Inventory Report (NIR) 2024 is now available. It provides in-depth information on how Australia measures and reports its greenhouse gas emissions.
NIR 2024 provides Australia's net greenhouse gas emissions for the period 1989-90 to 2023-24 by gas and by the following sectors:
- energy
- industrial processes and product use
- agriculture
- waste
- land use, land use change and forestry.
The NIR is prepared in accordance with Australia's annual emission reporting obligations under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and Paris Agreement.
It shows that Australia's total net greenhouse gas emissions were 466.4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2-e) in 2023-24.
Information on Australia's emissions for the more recent period, year to December 2025, will be reported in the next Quarterly Update of Australia's national inventory. That Update will include NIR 2024 results and improvements.
The NIR and Quarterly Updates form part of Australia's National Greenhouse Accounts (NGA). The NGA are a suite of reports and datasets used to:
- track Australia's progress towards its emissions reduction targets,
- inform climate policy and sectoral planning,
- support modelling and projections of future emissions, and
- provide transparency to the Australian and international communities.
Data from the most recent NGA reports, including NIR 2024, can be seen and downloaded from Australia's National Greenhouse Accounts (ANGA) online database.
ANGA allows users to download and interrogate historical and projected emissions estimates. It includes the full suite of National Greenhouse Accounts, providing additional information on Australia's regional, industry and gas (raw and CO2-e) emissions.
In the coming weeks the remaining elements of the NGA will be published:
- State and Territory Greenhouse Gas Inventories 2024
- National Inventory by Economic Sector 2024.
