National Police Remembrance Day 2021 goes online

Victoria Police is inviting the community to join an online memorial service to pay tribute to fallen police officers this National Police Remembrance Day.

Police across Australia will pause on Wednesday 29 September to honour the sacrifice of colleagues who have died in the line of duty.

The names of four police identified through historical research as having died while serving the community will be added to the Victoria Police Memorial Wall during this year’s service.

The service is taking place online for the second time to allow the Victoria Police workforce and the broader community to come together and remember fallen officers in line with coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

Since its establishment in 1853, Victoria Police has lost 174 police officers who have been killed while serving the community.

The online service will also honour the lives of six police officers and three Victorian Public Servants who have passed away since last National Police Remembrance Day.

Chief Commissioner Shane Patton will lay a wreath in honour of fallen colleagues at the Victoria Police Memorial Wall on St Kilda Road.

The online event can be accessed at 10am via the Victoria Police YouTube page. The service will remain online for those unable to attend at this time.

Blue Ribbon Day is held on the same day each year to coincide with National Police Remembrance Day.

Quotes attributable to Chief Commissioner Shane Patton

“Today is a solemn day for police and their families as we remember those who have paid the ultimate price while protecting the community.

“While we are disappointed we cannot unite in person to mark the occasion, we remain united today as we honour the sacrifice of the dedicated men and women who have lost their lives while seeking to keep us all safe.”
